The past decade has witnessed rapid evolution and change in many diagnostic spheres but has most particularly consolidated the role of the clinical laboratory as a major part of medical discipline. Improved laboratory methods and technological advances have extended the range of diagnostic tests and improved turnaround times have allowed medical practitioners to improve the quality of patient care. Underpinning the analytical service is a competent team led by Consultant Pathologists in each laboratory discipline. Advice on all aspects of the laboratory service is readily available. Furthermore the laboratory spends a significant amount of its resources on quality assessment and quality control. Most of the disciplines are fully accredited by Clinical Pathology Accreditation (UK) Ltd. Location The main laboratory is situated at Craigavon Area Hospital and provides a comprehensive Haematology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology and Histo/Cytopathology service.
