3 October 2008Part 1 of a 4 week series on Good Mental Health to mark World Mental Health Day on 10 OctoberAwareness of the factors affecting mental healthOver the course of a year, one in four people will be affected by some form of mental ill health. Young people are particularly at risk, as they make the difficult journey from childhood to adulthood. In a society obsessed with health and fitness, the lack of attention devoted to the area of mental wellness is surprising. The benefits of a healthy body are now well recognised, but the importance of a healthy mind continues to be overlooked. Most people see mental health as having little relevance to their own lives, applicable only to a small minority of individuals who are seriously ill. Yet, each and every one of us has the potential to develop a mental health problem and being aware of the early signs can help prevent many of these problems. Young people are faced with a wide range of pressures as they grow up in today’s society. These include concerns about how they look, substance misuse, bullying and exams. As a parent or carer, it can be difficult to distinguish between normal development and more serious problems that may require professional help. If a young person is experiencing mental health problems, their behaviour will often change. Signs to look out for include moody or irritable behaviour; long periods of time spent alone; changes in the circle of friends or social activities; school performance going down hill; different eating and/or sleeping habits; a lack of interest in looking after themselves or in hobbies and activities; and a low opinion of themselves. If you are worried about a young person, it may be helpful to encourage them to talk and this will help them figure out their difficulties, rather than feeling stuck with emotions building up inside; to take time to listen, without judging or getting angry which can be difficult but will help the young person to feel valued and accepted; and find out about how young people develop and any issues you are concerned about. Getting information will help you to feel better prepared and able to deal with problems. Carers should also watch out for changes in the young person’s behaviour, taking action early and being positive, as most difficulties can be sorted out given appropriate professional help. Seeking professional help if you are concerned is beneficial and your GP is the best person to contact first as they can explain the types of support available. As a carer or relative it is important to look after yourself by staying active and giving consideration to joining a support group where you can share experiences with others in similar situations. Further support is available from seven Protect Life Resource Centres that have been set up by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with local voluntary and community organisations.
