8 May 2008Breastfeeding Awareness WeekTo mark breastfeeding awareness week (commencing 12th May) the Southern Health and Social Care Trust has organised a number of information events throughout the Armagh and Dungannon area. There will be information sessions at all GP and Midwife led antenatal clinics; information stands at South Tyrone and Armagh Community hospitals and display stands at Tesco, Dungannon where health care professionals will be on hand to give advice and support. Breastfeeding has many health benefits for both baby and mum: • Breastfed babies are less likely to have many illnesses, including stomach, chest, and ear infections, asthma, diabetes and obesity. • Breastmilk protects premature babies against serious bowel disorders and ensures better eyesight and brain development. • Mothers who breastfeed have a lower risk of developing ovarian and breast cancer and osteoporosis in later life. National Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a nationwide annual event that has taken place since 1993. Run by the Department of Health, the week aims to highlight that breastfeeding is the healthiest feeding option for babies and mothers. This year’s theme for the week is ‘Staying with breastfeeding.’ The Southern Trust’s Baby Friendly Co-ordinator for Armagh and Dungannon, Ruth McGowan says: “Research has shown that support from peers and health professionals has a significant impact on a mum’s decision to continue breastfeeding. Staying with the decision to breastfeed isn’t always easy, especially if a mother is experiencing problems or is feeling tired or unsupported. This is when support from healthcare professionals, voluntary groups and breastfeeding support groups are vital.” The Southern Trust is committed to implementing the Baby Friendly Initiative to improve practice in relation to breastfeeding and breastfeeding rates. Armagh and Dungannon Locality has recently completed Baby Friendly Stage 1 assessment which will hopefully lead to the prestigious UNICEF/World Health Organisation Baby Friendly award. Uplift breastfeeding support counsellors are also launching a free telephone helpline and information leaflet. The helpline number is 0800 0857496 and is available from 10am to 4pm Monday – Friday. A number of coffee mornings are also being held throughout the area by breastfeeding support groups. For further advice on breastfeeding or local support groups contact your midwife or health visitor. |
