Mellow Parenting, and Mellow Babies, is available for families with young children in the Southern Trust area.
Mellow Parenting is a 14 week programme designed to support families who are experiencing relationship problems with their young children and have additional health and social care needs. Children should be aged between 1 and 4 years.
Mellow Parenting is based on principles from attachment theory, adult education and behavioural psychology. It combines support for parents with direct video feedback on the parents own interactions with their children, a method which has been shown to be extremely effective in helping parents to make changes.
Mellow Babies is a specialised version of Mellow Parenting but has been developed for parents and vulnerable babies under 1 year. The programme addresses both adult mental health including post natal depression and child protection issues.
When participating in either programme parents attend one full day each week, from 10am until 2pm. The child can be cared for in a children’s group or crèche.
Mellow Parenting programmes are being delivered by trained health and social care professionals across the Southern area.

Mellow Bumps is a new six week group programme designed to help mothers to be.
What will the group be like?
There will be about 6 or 8 mums-to-be and 2 workers.
Every week you will do some activities for your own wellbeing and some activities
to make you think about your baby, what they can do now and what they will need in the future.
Everything discussed in the group is private unless you or your baby might be at risk.
Parents must consent to any referral and must voluntarily attend.
Week One: A gentle introduction to put mums-to-be at ease, to establish a safe
environment, to dispel myths of motherhood and normalise reactions to babies. Mums are encouraged and given tips on how to promote relaxation time at home
Week Two: Reassurance of mums-to-be in the group, promotes healthy eating/exercise and behaviour and helps reduce maternal stress. You will cover how babies are prepared for social interaction from birth and the importance of lots of early interaction for brain development. Mums are encouraged to promote “me time”.
Week Three: Looks at what support is available for the new parent’s to be. Mums are introduced to music and games that help relax baby before and after birth.
Week Four: To plan future support for when baby is born, to promote sharing and to reduce maternal stress. Mums-to-be are supported to do something positive for themselves or with someone they chose.
Week Five: Activity week – This week is very much up to what the group and the facilitators organise. Ie aquanatal class, aromatherapist, beauty session a picnic in the park…..
Week Six: Endings and planning of future support for mum and baby that will to help reduce maternal stress and support the mum to be for the birth and the precious times after with her baby.
Mellow Bumps groups have been shown to help mums-to-be relax, increase parent and child relationships, boost confidence and have led to completed gestation (40 weeks) and healthier birth weight of babies.
