IIP for Newry and Mourne Nursing Staff

Nursing staff in Newry and Mourne are celebrating after learning that they are to receive the prestigious ‘Investor in People’ award. The Southern Area Health Promotion Department has been recognised as an Investor in People organisation for the third time.

Francis Rice, Executive Director of Nursing at the Trust, says, “This is wonderful news for the nursing staff in the locality and everyone in the directorate can take a great pride in this accolade.

“The report from the IIP assessor proves that the Newry and Mourne Nursing Directorate is committed to learning and development in order to achieve the Trust’s objectives.

“The assessor commented that the contribution staff make to the Trust is recognised and valued, there is a very strong people focus within the directorate, and staff are continually improving the levels and range of services provided. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

The Nursing Directorate provides a full range of nursing services at Daisy Hill Hospital, including inpatient and outpatient, day cases and investigative treatments, and a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Department. Community nursing services are delivered across numerous sites from Kilkeel to Crossmaglen.

In an assessor’s report, John Mulholland from IIP states, “Staff in the Newry and Mourne locality are involved in meeting performance targets and . . . remain acutely focused on the needs of patients and the development of further nurse-led services to help reduce discharge times, improve infection control and maintain cleanliness.”

A number of strengths were identified in the Nursing Directorate including loyal and very committed staff who are keenly focused on patient care and service improvement, and a strong commitment to Continuing Professional Development with good use of external qualifications including NVQs.

The report states that staff have access to an impressive range of development opportunities including projects, secondments, e learning, study days, conferences, internet and ward practice.

The directorate was also commended on its ‘cordial and productive relationships exist within the wards and staff generally had great respect for ward managers’. The staff were also praised for effective partnerships developed in the delivery of services.
