STAY PROJECT

SUPPORTED TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION for YOUTH

A DEFINITION OF SUPPORTED LODGINGS
Supported Lodgings Scheme (SLS) recruit, vet and support a  network of local people (providers) who offer a room in their  home, with some level of support, to vulnerable and / or homeless single young people.

Lodgings are provided on a temporary basis. The young person is offered a breathing space and the opportunity to develop the skills appropriate to independent living in a supportive environment.

Support to the young person comes generally from the provider and external voluntary or statutory agencies e.g. social services, probation, health authority.

The scheme is run by the Young Persons Project, Craigavon and Banbridge Health and Social Services.

The scheme can provide supported lodgings for vulnerable homeless young people aged between 16 and 21. The lodgings are only available on a temporary basis until permanent accommodation is available or appropriate.

The lodgings are in the homes of families / couples / individuals throughout Northern Ireland. A variety of placements are available and a matching process will be carried out to ensure that the best placement is made. The provider is expected to offer support to the young person.

The young person will be provided with their own bedroom, but be expected to share other facilities. The young person will contribute towards their living costs and rental support costs are sought through the Supporting People Fund.

Aims of the Scheme:

The purpose of the scheme is to provide temporary accommodation for young people, who are homeless and experiencing difficulties, This allows space and time for problems to be resolved, goals to be defined and a move on to permanent accommodation within the community, to be arranged when appropriate.
