Mentoring Adolescents/ Providing Support,
WHAT IS MENTORING?
Mentoring is a relationship between an adult and young person. A mentor is an adult who will spend time with you, listen to you, take an interest, support, advise and encourage. Mentoring is about supporting you to reach your potential in your life.
"People who grew up in difficult circumstances, and yet are successful, have on thing in common. ...at a critical junction in their early adolescence, they had a positive relationship with a caring adult".
BILL CLINTON
WHO ARE MENTORS?
Mentors are adult volunteers who volunteer their time and energy to mentor a young person.
HOW CAN A MENTOR HELP ME?
- Would you like to have a caring adult you feel you can trust?
- Somebody who will listen to what you have to say.
- An adult to spend time with you to help you make choices?
- To encourage you to develop your individual qualities.
- Someone you can turn to when you need to talk
If you think you would like this support then a mentor can help you!!
HOW DOES IT WORK?
- We will try to find a mentor who shares your interests/hobbies.
- You will be introduced to your mentor so you can get to know each other
- You will meet with him/her once a week for about an hour
- If you are happy with your mentor, he/she will meet you for up to one year
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM INTERESTED?
The MAPS Co-ordinator will visit you and your parent carer to tell you more about mentoring.
