Smoke Free SHSCT
Trust Board Endorses Smoke Free Plans
At their March meeting the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Board endorsed plans for the Trust to go completely smoke free by March 2016.
The proposal follows the announcement from Health Minister Jim Wells on No Smoking Day on 11 March 2015, that all health and social care sites should be smoke free by March 2016.
The Southern Trust has operated a Smoke Free policy since 2008 which prohibits smoking in all of its buildings except those registered under The Residential Care Homes Order (NI) – which have a designated smoking room.
This latest move means that smoking will no longer be permitted anywhere on Southern Trust grounds, buildings, entrances, car parks or in cars by anyone including patients, clients, visitors, staff, and contracted workers.
SHSCT Smoke Free Sites Survey Results
The SHSCT undertook a survey in November 2014 to establish the views of staff, patients, service users and the public about plans to introduce smoke free sites. This was in response to the target set by the Health Minister, that all HSC sites should become smoke free by 9th March 2016. The survey results demonstrate wide support for this move with 65.5% of respondents in favour of Trust sites becoming completely smoke free. Staff provided many comments when completing the survey and these are being considered by the Trust’s Smoke Free Steering Group. Thank you to all participants who took the time to respond to the survey.
Stop Smoking support for patients
If you have a planned intervention in hospital, stopping smoking weeks or even months before your procedure will really help your recovery. Time in hospital is a great time to stop smoking and research tells us that hospitalised patients are more successful at stopping than any other smokers. Our staff are here to help and support you throughout both your hospital stay and when you go home.
Family and friends who wish to stop smoking will be welcome to attend the Stop Smoking Clinics.
Smoking can seriously damage your health – breathing tobacco smoke can kill. As a health care organisation, we actively discourage smoking.
