International Day of Radiology and World Radiography Day
21/11/2018
We recently celebrated International Day of Radiology and World Radiography Day on 8 November, which is the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays in 1895.
Jeanette Robinson, Head of Diagnostics in the Southern Trust said: “The Trust offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic imaging services including MRI, CT Scanning, Ultrasound and X-ray for all patients, carrying out approximately 307,000 examinations per year. They specialise in diagnosing and treating disease and injury through the use of medical imaging technology such as X-rays. Radiology is a very important area for the diagnosis of many conditions, including cancer.
“The service is provided by a skilled team of dedicated radiologists, radiographers and sonographers which is essential to safe and high quality health care. There are also radiographic assistants who support the clinical staff and a dedicated administration team who provide essential non-clinical support, dealing with a full range of patient presentations.
“Radiology staff use the Northern Ireland Picture Archiving and Communications System (NIPACS) which is a digital radiology information system that allows x-rays and scans to be viewed on specially designated computers, without the need for any printing. X-ray images are easily shared with staff across the Trust, making the diagnostic process quicker and much more efficient with the use of Ipads and viewing stations in clinical areas.”
“As the timely and accurate diagnosis of patients through these technologies is vital in ensuring that patients get the most appropriate care, our radiography staff have an influential role in reducing patient waiting times and drive up standards of care, particularly in cancer care.”
Recently Trust Radiographers led by Trust Anomaly Lead, Hazel McBurney received the Health and Social Care Leadership Award for Leadership and Culture for their Trauma Imaging reporting by Radiographers submission.
