Talk to your family about Organ Donation
05/12/2014The Southern Trust is supporting Northern Ireland’s first Organ Donation Family Discussion Day on 11 December. The day is intended to encourage families from across Northern Ireland to sit down with their loved ones and discuss their views on organ donation in the run up to Christmas, which is a traditional time for families to come together.
Edel Livingstone, Specialist nurse for Organ Donation in the Southern Trust who works directly with the families on this sensitive issue said: “This campaign has been launched to encourage families throughout Northern Ireland to sit down with their loved ones on December 11 and discuss their wishes on organ donation and consider how one donor can save many lives. By listening and respecting the wishes of your loved ones if or when the time arrives you will be better placed to do what they want. If you don’t discuss it you will never know.
“In Northern Ireland almost 200 people are currently waiting for a transplant and sadly the chance will come too late for many, with approximately 15 people each year dying while on the waiting list. Through the organ donation discussion day on December 11 we want to ensure as many families as possible are aware of the benefits of organ donation and have the knowledge of what their loved ones would want.
“It is important for people to think seriously about the life changing benefits that organ donation brings and to make their families aware of their willingness to donate. Organ donation cannot go ahead without family consent, this is the case whether they are on the organ donor register or not and that is why it is so important to be aware of the wishes of our loved ones. There are too many people in Northern Ireland who pass away without their families being aware of their views on organ donation.
“In the last 2 years the Southern Trust has been able to pass on the gift of life to a total of 40 people who received life changing transplants. On behalf of the Trust, our sincere thanks go out to every family who, at a difficult time, either supported their loved one's wish to donate their organs or made a decision to donate on their behalf. By doing so they have helped transform the lives of others.”
Families can show their support of the campaign by sharing that they have had the conversation and calling on others to do the same by posting their photographs or messages and using the hashtag #Dec11Tellyourlovedones.
