Mayor’s Fact Finding Visit to Southern Trust
11/11/2014The Southern Health and Social Care Trust has taken the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Colin McCusker on a fact finding tour of services throughout the Borough.
The visit included a tour of Lurgan Hospital to see the wide range of outpatient and outreach services and where the Mayor met Heart Failure staff and the new Rapid Response Team who are providing a hospital at home service to older people living in the greater Craigavon area.
During his visit, the Mayor had lunch with the Senior Luncheon Club at Drumellan ‘Verve’ Centre which offers a range of health and wellbeing activities. He also dropped into a health screening session organised by the Trust’s Hearty Lives Nurse who promotes heart health amongst Black and Minority Ethnic and Irish Traveller communities.
At Craigavon Area Hospital, Councillor McCusker spoke to Emergency Department staff about how they continue to be one of the best performing in Northern Ireland despite an increasing number of patients and of their preparation for the winter pressures ahead.
He also visited the Paediatric Decision Unit which is making life much easier for families by treating children and young people who need a short period of observation or treatment, but avoids the stress and disruption of an overnight hospital stay.
The last stop of the day was the Bluestone Unit which has recently completed a £4.7 million extension with the opening of two new wings - the Dorsy Unit for the assessment of adults with a learning disability and Rosebrook, which is home to the Trust’s psychiatric intensive care unit.
Here the Mayor spoke to staff about the wide range of mental health and learning disability services available including Talking Therapies and Eating Disorders and had the opportunity to view some of the ArtsCare Projects developed by clients.
Southern Trust Chair, Roberta Brownlee who hosted the visit said: “Whilst the Trust and the Council work in close partnership on a wide range of projects, we were delighted that Councillor McCusker was able to take the time out of his schedule to meet with staff, patients and clients and see how our services are delivered at the frontline. We hoped through this visit to give the Mayor some appreciation of the wide variety of services we offer for older people, younger people, those with complex needs, marginalised groups – and the whole population and show him our commitment to providing safe high quality care, both within the hospital and across our community settings.”
“We are very privileged to have the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in our Borough” comments the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Colin McCusker, “ and to have such dedicated staff working on behalf of the thousands of people who attend the Trust on a regular and one-off basis. I’ve seen at first hand their expertise, commitment and drive to help people and its humbling.”
