‘Hello my name is ……’
10/11/2014The Southern Health and Social Care Trust is promoting a new initiative aimed at putting patients and clients at ease – ‘Hello my name is…’ ‘Hello My Name Is’ was founded by Dr Kate Granger who through her experience as a patient in an English hospital, felt it was important for staff to always introduce themselves before delivering care. She said “I firmly believe it is not just about knowing someone’s name, it is about making a human connection, beginning a therapeutic relationship and building trust. In my mind it is the first rung on the ladder to providing compassionate care.”
The campaign is being adopted by Health and Social Care across Northern Ireland, to emphasize to staff the importance of introducing themselves to their patients and clients and taking time to discuss their proposed care and treatment with them in a way that they can fully understand.
Launching ‘Hello my name is ..’ in the Southern Trust area, Chief Executive Mairead McAlinden says: “Our patients and clients and their experience of our care is very important to every member of staff working in the Southern Trust. Everyone is committed to providing safe, high quality care, and to do that in a compassionate way that involves and engages our patients, clients, families and carers.
“People who need health and social care services are often ill, injured or vulnerable and it is understandably a very anxious time for them, so as health and social care professionals we know how important it is to put them at ease, explain our role and what they should expect whilst in our care.
“Every member of our staff – our front line clinical and managerial staff and those who support them such as our administrative, portering, domestic and catering staff - all have a very important role to play in delivering compassionate care.
“This campaign offers an opportunity for us all to understand how important our role is and to remind ourselves, despite how busy we may be, to do all we can to make sure that our patients and clients have a positive experience in our care.”
