Kathleen Brogan, Sport NI Active Communities Disability Coach, explains “Boccia is a precision ball sport related to bowls. The sport is contested at local, national and international levels. It was originally designed to be played by people with cerebral palsy but now includes athletes with other severe disabilities affecting their motor skills. Boccia has given many people with Disabilities the chance to partake in sport and physical activity in a safe, fun and controlled environment, as well as giving them the opportunity to make new friends, while leading a more active and social lifestyle within their local communities”.
The event was organised in partnership between the Southern Trust Fit 4 U Project, Craigavon Borough Council, Disability Sports NI, Sport NI Active Communities and Dungannon Leisure Centre. This event builds on the successful work of these organisations in developing the sport of boccia for people with a disability across the Southern Area.
