Newry and Mourne prepares for First Positive Ageing Week!
06/09/2012
The community of Newry and Mourne is preparing to host its first Positive Ageing Week running from the 8th to 14th of October 2012.The focus of the week is to celebrate and promote the positive aspects of growing old and to recognise the valuable contribution older people make within our communities.
Events during this week are being hosted by senior citizen groups, and community voluntary organisations. You can come along to any of the events to get a taster of some of the activities that are happening in your local community. Examples of events that will be taking place are tea dances, pitch and putt, dancing in the Forresters, new age Kurling and much much more!
Positive Ageing Week has been jointly organised by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Newry and Mourne District Council, the Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT) Older People’s project, Newry and Mourne Senior Citizen’s Consortium, Volunteer Now, Newry U3A, Newry and Mourne Community Transport and South Down Family Health Initiative, Confederation of Community Groups and South Armagh Women and Family Health Initiative. Financial support has been provided by the European Union’s INTERREG IVA funding secured by CAWT, Volunteer Now and Newry and Mourne District Council.
Please get involved in Positive Ageing Week! You might already be running activities that could tie in with the week or maybe you would like to host an event that week. “Positive Ageing Week is about recognising the work that community voluntary organisations do to improve the health and wellbeing of older people. It is also about reaching out to everyone over 50, particularly those who are more vulnerable, and asking them to get involved in the events that are taking place across Newry & Mourne. We would like Positive Ageing Week to be the catalyst for connecting more older people into community life”. Nikki Girvan, Project Support Worker CAWT Older People’s Project.
Groups that participate and host an event during the week will receive complimentary tickets to our celebration event being held in Bellini’s on Thursday 11th October. Look out for our Positive Ageing booklet and calendar of events which will be available by the end of September 2012.
