Taking Care of Your Mental Health in Tough Economic Times

03/01/2012

Tough economic times can have a negative impact on our ability to cope with everyday life. It is important to look after our mental health and wellbeing and recognise the early signs of mental distress.

At least one in five of us will suffer from a mental health problem at some stage in our lives and the current economic situation that we face places extra pressure on individuals and families.

In recognition of these difficulties the Southern Trust, the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) and the Public Health Agency have developed a leaflet which highlights positive ways to help individuals cope during challenging times.

In addition, the Jobs & Benefits office in Armagh in partnership with the Southern Trust’s Promoting Wellbeing Team is hosting a Mental Health and Wellbeing week from 9th -13th January 2012.

Melanie McClements, Assistant Director of Promoting Wellbeing with the Southern Trust said “The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness among individuals of their mental health needs and to highlight the many services locally that are available to support those who are feeling overwhelmed by the impact of job loss both financially and mentally.”

Aodán Cunningham, Manager , Armagh Jobs & Benefits office, DEL, said,
“We are delighted to be involved in this partnership with the Southern Trust. Our Pathways Advisers are already trained to help and support customers who may be suffering from a mental illness, however, this additional information, in the form of a new leaflet about looking after your mental health and useful contacts for accessing support, will also be available within the Jobs & Benefits office. All customers who attend the Jobs & Benefits office during the Mental Health and Wellbeing week will receive a copy. Further training for staff in the Jobs & Benefits office has already started and is designed to enable them to recognise signs that someone may be experiencing mental distress and refer them for appropriate help.”

The Jobs & Benefits office in Armagh is also hosting a Stop Smoking Clinic for people who attend the office who want to stop smoking. The clinic will start on Wednesday 11th January 2012 and will run for 4 weeks between 2pm and 3.30pm each day. To book an appointment contact Cathy Murray, Southern Trust, Tel: 07769 256756
