26 November 2007Cross Border Boccia EventPeople with physical and sensory disabilities from Armagh and Dungannon have competed in a Boccia tournament against people with disabilities from REHAB Care, Monaghan. The event was organised through the Big Lottery funded Fit 4 U Project co-ordinated by Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone. Fit 4 U aims to improve the health of people with physical and sensory disabilities by introducing them to new physical activity, leisure and recreational opportunities. Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Project Worker, explains: “Many people with disabilities don’t take part in leisure or physical activities due to a number of barriers, such as lack of confidence, concerns about personal safety or difficulty accessing transport and facilities. Boccia is an inclusive sport for people with all types of disabilities, similar to bowls, but played from a seated position with soft leather balls.” The Boccia tournament was specifically funded by Blackwater Community Support Programme which is supported by Border Action through the EU INTERREG 111A programme for Ireland/Northern Ireland. Aileen Finch, from Station Road Resource Centre in Armagh who took part in the event said “I really enjoyed it” and Michael Thorton, added “The event was great, no matter if you win or lose it was great fun taking part and I enjoyed getting to know new people.” Una Cushnahan, Acting Manager, Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone, says: “This event was an excellent opportunity for people with disabilities from different groups, North and South of the border to socialise and develop new friendships. The game of Boccia promotes positive physical, mental and social health, is good for co-ordination, balance, accuracy and flexibility, requires concentration and provides a sense of achievement through meeting the target.” |
