21 May 2008Action for Children in EducationExtra support is now available for children with special educational needs. The Action for Children in Education (ACE) Team has been set up by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with Education to work with children and their families to achieve their personal and educational goals. ACE is a multidisciplinary team of Speech and Language Therapists, Social Workers, Nurses, Orthoptists and Healthcare Workers which offers a range of services including: • Vision screening for all children in special schools. • Support for children leaving the Child Development Centre and attending mainstream school. • Support for children with complex nursing needs in mainstream schools. • Awareness training for school staff on managing diabetes, asthma, allergies and epilepsy. • A programme for teachers and classroom assistants to screen the speech and language skills of children entering Primary 1.
The project is funded by the Children and Young Peoples Funding Package which tackles social, health and educational inequalities. ACE is currently planning to develop its services through the recruitment of an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and Dietitian. It is also developing schemes to support the needs of parents including training.
A parent of a child and family receiving speech and language therapy and social work from the project said: “I’m really pleased with this service and have seen a great change in my child’s schooling. He is much more included. The Teacher and Classroom Assistant are much more able to cope with him and he is much happier.” For further information on ACE Tel: 028 3741 2830. |
