10 January 2008Free Electric Blanket Checks for BanbridgePeople who use electric blankets are being invited to have them tested free of charge at Banbridge Leisure Centre, on Thursday 24 January from 10am - 4pm.
Electric blankets cause over 800 fires in the UK each year, with nearly 20 deaths and 200 injuries. Most of the casualties are people aged over 60 years. A series of electric blanket testing roadshows have been funded by the Southern Area Accident Prevention Liaison Group and co-ordinated by the Southern Area Health Promotion Department. Valerie Gough, from the Southern Health and Social Care Trust’s Health Promotion Team says: “Injuries and fires often happen because people do not use their blankets properly or never have them serviced. A recent survey revealed that more then one third of electric blankets are over 15 years old. Newer ones have to meet stricter safety regulations, including having a cut-out device to prevent overheating.” “People often use blankets as a cheap source of heating. It is suspected that some blankets are never taken off the bed and people are unaware when they have become worn or damaged. Electric blankets need to be checked at least every three years. This event will offer people advice on the correct use and storage of their electric blankets.” If you would like to attend this event to have your electric blanket tested please book an appointment Tel: 028 3839 8235. |
