17.04.08 Off Road Driving Experience

17 April 2008

Off Road Driving Experience

People with physical and sensory disabilities from the Armagh and Dungannon areas have been enjoying an off road driving experience as part of the Fit 4 U Project.

Funded by Big Lottery, Fit 4 U introduces people with physical and sensory disabilities to new leisure, recreational and physical activities.

Service users from Willowbank Resource Centre, Dungannon, Station Road Resource Centre, Armagh and Moy Resource Centre, took part in a range of teambuilding and outdoor activities including archery and off road Landrover driving at Todds Leap Activity Centre, Ballygawley.

Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Project Worker says: “Fit 4 U gives people with physical and sensory disabilities the chance to experience activities they had not imagined possible. The off road driving has been an exciting experience for everyone involved. It has promoted participants confidence, provided a sense of achievement and benefited their overall health and wellbeing.”

Anne Willis, participant from Moy Resource Centre, when referring to the off road driving said “It was an experience that I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Jillian Cosgrove, Acting Manager, Armagh and Dungannon Health Action Zone which co-ordinates the Fit 4 U Project, adds: “Todds Leap Activity Centre has designed ramps and steps specifically for our groups to improve access to vehicles for wheelchair users and those with restricted mobility. This shows how the Fit 4 U Project is challenging and raising awareness among service providers of the needs of people with disabilities.”
